A day in the life of Mathilde Maugey Leather Shop

How did you get into leather crafting? What does your job involve?

I started leather crafting when I was 15, making leather jewellery and accessories at home and selling at medieval markets. I made a career change 4 years ago to start with the French association ‘Les compagnons du Devoir et du Tour de France’ as a leatherworker and have travelled around the world through different companies. At the start, my job involved making bags and wallets, and here at Silverlining I learnt about furniture.

What made you choose SL as a company to work for?

It was the first time in my life as a leather worker I felt inspired by the products, the people and the way of working, we never make the same pieces twice and go beyond limits to work with leather and all its properties. Working with wood and furniture is unusual for a leather worker in France so it’s a wonderful experience.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Always learning new skills, tools and projects that are challenging and always keeping us thinking.  Being considered as a professional and able to do anything and everything.

 What 5 words describe Silverlining?

Innovation, curiosity, teamwork, exploration, travel

I worked for a leading ceramic company which had a similar client base. I heard about SL through them. Once I saw what SL does It looked such an inspirational place to work, when you see it for the first time and look around its impossible not to be impressed. I had to get my foot in the door!

What’s the best thing about your job?

We never make the same pieces twice, so every project is different with new challenges. I have real freedom to develop ideas and techniques, working with so many talented people is so much fun and I learn new things constantly. I also enjoy working closely with like-minded people.

Friday, 08 June 2018

What made you want to become a designer?

I always wanted to be a designer. I liked art and creative subjects in school so became interested in the aesthetics of objects, especially cars from an early age. Becoming a designer always felt like a natural progression.

How do you stay inspired? Or what inspires you?

Silverlining is a creative and inspiring place to work with a talented design team – discussing projects within the team provides a lot of inspiration. We do a lot of research into new techniques, technologies and materials and think about how they can be applied in innovative ways to create amazing bespoke furniture. Many of our designs are heavily influenced by nature which is a constant source of inspiration.

What made you choose SL as a company to work for?

The opportunity to design incredible pieces that push the boundaries of what’s possible in furniture design, also to learn about the luxury bespoke market and all the materials, techniques and finishes that are involved. Work is also close to my house.

What 5 words describe Silverlining?

Iconic, inspirational, aspirational, creativity, excellence
